Our next exhibit features Lenawee County resident artists who have participated in Art Prize. If you are unfamiliar with Art Prize, it is a juried national art show in Grand Rapids, MI. Lenawee County and the LCVA have had the honor of having several members selected in the highly regarded show. Among them are James Freeman, Thomas Thiery and Carlos Tobar. Please come out and see all the artists and their fabulous work. The reception will be on January 28th, 2012. The images are of works by James Freeman (above) and Carlos Tobar (below).

Come One! Come All! To "The Tell Tale Art" Silent Auction and Costume event! Saturday, October 29th at the Croswell House Gallery, from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm when the bidding ends! Proceeds will go to benefit a scholarship fund to assist kids in attending area art camps as well as help the LCVA repay the Croswell for a beautifully renovated gallery space! Tell everyone you know! Wine and appetizers will be served!

The LCVA MOVE...

The LCVA Board has installed “Let It Rain Art”, in our new Croswell space. Over 35 artists brought work for our first exhibition.

Due to the amount of work and space available we hung two rather than three of each members work. The show and space look great, although we are still waiting for our new showcase to be delivered and track lights to be installed any day now. All else is done.

Dues and membership...

We will have a “welcome home” celebratory meeting on Sunday May 16 at 4pm in the new gallery. We'll talk about meeting times and future shows.

We want remind every one to send in their dues, as we will be paying rent to the Croswell and our main income is membership dues.

You should have received an invoice for your dues in the last month, if you did not contact treasurer, Mike Jacobitz at mhjacobitz@verizon.net

Also, on the 16^th bring your planners as we will have sign up for the one job per year that all members will contribute to keep the LCVA running. It is no secret that in the past we had trouble with too few doing the work for many. We want to emulate the adage, “many hands make light work” to avoid burning out good, contributing members.

Jobs vary from show installation and deinstallation and gallery prep to receptions, making labels for identifying works, to publicity, card design and mailing. If you weren’t at the meeting last spring we will have information available about what each job entails with support contact with members who are well familiar what needs to be done for each task.

We will also look ahead and begin planning for Art-A-Licious, our fundraiser and our first sales gallery show. Come ready to make a commitment to the success of the LCVA.

Tecumseh Art Walk

Gregg will be at the River Raisin Gallery (formerly Great Ideas) demonstrating printmaking. There will be over 30 artists displaying their art or demonstrating in downtown Tecumseh.

July/August Members' Exhibition

Current Members' Show will close on August 21 (Friday) with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. You'll take your work home with you at 8:oo p.m. (You can also pick up your work during gallery hours, noon - 4, on Sat., Aug. 22.) Please come and enjoy!

We really need someone to be the point person for this reception.

After a decade of organizing almost every reception we've had, Marjorie would like to "retire" (and she will be up north for this one). Thank you, thank you, Marjorie, for doing this all these years!

She has graciously shared her list of folks who can be counted on to donate, so this only requires some emailing and/or phone calls and being at the gallery at 4 pm on Aug. 21st to set up. Members are gracious about donating--we have a bunch of cooks and wine afficianados in this group--and about helping with clean up/pack up.

The Sitters' Schedule has been updated and is visible in the post below this one (It's Alive!). We have some near term gaps--please look and see if you can help. For this show, I'm happy to update and correct the blog. Email me at croyer@adrian.edu.

It was a pleasant surprise this afternoon to see the beautiful face of my good friend Patricia Deere on the cover of Lenawee Magazine. The feature is titled, "Working in Glass, Inside the studios of three Lenawee County glass artists". The artists include Patricia Deere, Lorenzo Christaudo, and Craig Weatherby. Wait a minute...there's more! local artists Janet Graham, Dennis Swartzlander and Dan Newland are featured in the "talk of lenawee" section. The Lenawee Magazine is just what our county needs. It's nice to see our county featured in a positive light for a change. Bravo Lenawee Magazine! And, thanks Lad Strayer for the beautiful photos.

90th Annual Toledo Area Artists Exhibition

The College Town Show

Here it comes....the first ever College Town Show by the LCVA at the LCVA Gallery in downtown Adrian. Everybody knows the LCVA has a close relationship with Adrian College. But what about that other school? or other schools I should say. It has been my goal for a LONG time to try to get show going that features the art of ALL the colleges in Adrian....not just AC. I know a few graduates from Siena Heights University and their art program is REALLY good. I cant wait to see what the students bring in next week. To make things even more interesting I received an email from Cathie Royer of Adrian College that stated one of her students will be displaying video art...say what? Yes, I said video art. We're setting up a projector next week. Hope to see you all there.

I hope to have this show up and running by Oct. 2nd. When I get all the students together next week we'll pick a reception date. This show will run until Nov. 1st.

Who said we don't know how to have fun? ha! This little gem of a collage was created by artist Christine Marsh for the Postcard Show fundraiser. The face is yours truly. I think the body is Mr. Atlas...complete with sea shell coverings. Everyone really pranked me good with this. First, nobody would tell who created it. Then after my wife purchased it, nobody would tell who bought it. Fun was had by all =)

The Art-A-Licious Festival was a blast. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. The organizers for this event did a fantastic job. The City of Adrian really deserves our kudos for creating a wonderful artist friendly event.

Spotlight Show and Gala

The annual Spotlight Exhibition begins on Thursday, May 15th with a Gala event that is nothing like we've ever done before. This night has a lot going on. I'll break it down into pieces.

The Spotlight Exhibition features the work of the Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts best artists as selected by last years Box Show Juror, Duane Bastian. The Spotlight artists are Robin Dluzen, Kristin Haddox, and Juliana Clenendin.

The Gala Fundraiser is something we've been working on for about a year. It's an event being organized by member, Kris Schmidt, that will help raise money to support LCVA programs. The street in front of the LCVA Gallery at 112 W. Maumee will be closed off and a tent will be set up to hold for a very special activity. Several local artists will begin a painting from scratch at 12:30 pm. We are calling them "Blank Canvas Artists" and they are....Duane Bastian, Annie Howard, Dottie Huls, Kimberly Meyers-Pinkel, Cathie Royer, Jill Shaffer, Tom Thiery, and Carlos Tobar. The public is welcome to come and watch these amazing artists at work. Tickets will be sold (10 for $10) and you can have a chance to win one of the paintings by placing your tickets in jars next to each artist. Names will be drawn from the jars at 7:30 pm.

At 6:00 pm the Gallery doors will be closed for a private party. Tickets are available in advance for $25 per person. Formal attire is required. Here you will get a chance to meet the Spotlight artists and Blank Canvas artists and mingle with some of the best artists in Lenawee County.

On Monday, May 12th at 8:40 am please tune in to WABJ Radio at 1490 AM because Vice President, Janet Graham and several Blank Canvas artists will be interviewed on air for approximately 15 minutes to talk about the event.

Stop by Tecumseh this Friday night for the first ever "Tecumseh Art Walk" (April 18th, 7-9 PM). Eleven businesses are hosting artists and will be providing Hors D' Oeuvres and refreshments. The Art Walk is the kick off event to Tecumseh's Women's Weekend. Businesses include The Boulevard Market, The Wild Iris, The Daily Grind B&B, Pentamere Winery, Evans Street Restaurant, The Yarn Basket, The British Pantry, Great Ideas and That Used Book Store among others. For the past three years a handful of LCVA members have donated artwork to the Circle of Art auction at the Saline Picture Frame Company. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Food Gatherers Organization. For more information about this event click here.

FINALLY!!!!

Myself and Chris Graham are meeting at the gallery on Tuesday, January 15th at 5:30 pm to run a water line to the bathroom sink. If you would like to help out please stop by. Here is a list of things that needs to be done if you want to help.

1. The back closet needs to be cleaned out completely. Stuff either needs to go to the basement or thrown away. If you can do this before the 15th our work will go quicker.

2. The front closet needs to be cleaned out completely. I have been tearing out some drywall and have made a mess of it. When the drywall is patched and painted we'll move the stuff back. It can be relocated to the gallery floor since we have no exhibits in January.

3. The walls in the gallery could use some serious sanding...not hand sanding....power sanding. If you're interested and have a power sander then please go for it...I have one if you want to borrow it.

4. There are two areas in the front closet that need drywall replaced....small patches approximately 14x24. If you have any spare drywall, tape and mud we need some. But, this must wait until after we install the water lines.

5. When all the drywall is patched we'll need somebody to paint. Got any spare white paint at home sitting on a shelf? We need some.

6. Janet will be repainting and putting in a new tile floor in the bathroom after the water lines are installed. If you're interested in helping her with that please let her know. grahams4@tc3net.com

7. We wont get everything done in one night. I'll be in and out of there a few times next week. If you want to go on your own time.....let me or Janet know and well give you the door combination.

What's New for 2008?

What's new in 2008? Well let me tell ya.....we're going to try to some new stuff. First, can I see a raise of hands from those of you who think our monthly board meetings are BORING! My hand is raised. I would like to hold board meetings privately starting in 2008. But, the monthly meeting is going to be an entirely new format. I'd like to see these meetings be social/educational events. We'll start having artist of the month competitions, possibly some art demonstrations, critiques and maybe even visit a few local galleries/studios. And, if you bring the desert, I'll bring the coffee. Let's have some fun.

We have a committee working on a very special fundraiser during the Spotlight Exhibition. It will be formal and fun. I always look forward to the updates from the planning committee.

I'm pretty certain the Box Show Fundraiser will be replaced with something new. Janet has some great ideas bouncing around in her head.

We're going to start exhibiting artwork at the Image Gallery starting in January.

We've planned a very special exhibition at Hidden Lake Gardens this coming Spring. HLG is taking care of everything....advertisements, mailings, and reception. All we have to do is supply the art. I'm really looking forward to this event.

And, don't forget the annual Art-a-licious Festival. The 2008 festival will be bigger and better. We perked a lot of interest with this event. It's a BIG event that takes a lot of hard work and time to plan and prepare for. If you are interested in helping out please contact Pi Benio at pbenio@adrian.edu

We're also going to try something that I'm pretty sure has never been done before. We're planning an exhibition of Adrian College Students AND Siena Heights University students. We're calling it the College Town Show.

How do I navigate through this blog?

I know the address isn't very catchy, but it's here to stay or at least until we grow out of it. A lot of you Google the LCVA to find this site, which is OK but it doesn't always take you to the "home" page. Here's a tip......If you click on the big text at the top of the page it will always take you to the "home" page where you will find the latest blog entries. So if you get lost....just click on the big text at the top.

Where can I get membership information?

We have pamphlets at the gallery or you can click on "Membership Info" under the category "Exhibitions and Other Important Stuff".

Is the gallery moving or what?

That's a good question that gets asked a lot. Here's an honest answer. We're a non-profit organization that operates on a very small budget. And, we are getting a SWEET deal on rent at our current location. But as everyone knows the location isn't exactly prime territory. So, we're always looking for new "opportunities" for alternative exhibition locations. We have had some really cool prospects recently. Some of them didn't pan out. Some are still promising. I hesitate to give out any more information until prospects are solidified. Until then, lets just call them really cool prospects. If we do move, we plan on keeping the gallery to convert it to studio space or workshop space. We currently have members who are "in" with the City of Adrian downtown development squad. We're in a good position to jump on good prospects. It just may take some time.

Why should I become a member?

Everyone has different reasons for becoming a member. Personally I joined to learn more about how the art world functions. The truth is there are plenty of exhibition opportunities for artists in Lenawee County. And, there are many artists in Lenawee County who take advantage of those opportunities. We have great local artists who do not exhibit locally because very few people perceive Lenawee County as an art community. Some people say that reality is perception. Changing this perception takes a lot of effort and guts. The purpose of the LCVA is to grow the art community and to change this perception. As a group of artists we can change how people feel about Lenawee County easier than if artists tried it alone. My favorite comment said to me during the Art-a-licious festival was, "gee, I never realized we had such wonderful local artists." So, if your a novice artist the LCVA can teach you all about exhibiting your work. If you're a working artist, the LCVA can help you transition into a professional career. And, if you're a professional artist...the LCVA needs you. Our professional artist members are the backbone of the organization. Working with other professionals is certainly a great way to establish a network within the artist community.

Holiday Salon Exhibition 2007

The Holiday Salon is fast approaching - hopefully you've all been busy in your workshops/studios! The drop off date for work will be Tuesday, November 6th from 4-7 pm. If you can't make it, please contact me to arrange another time. If you would like to drop off your work before November 6th please place work in the back hallway or behind the desk.

Installation will be on Wednesday, 11/7 from 5-9 pm. Help is always appreciated. We will also have flyers available during the drop off time for you to pick up and distribute to help advertise the show.You may bring as many pieces as you'd like but they might not all be up right away - we will put up additional pieces as things sell.

We voted in the 20% commission at our last meeting so please price your work accordingly. 2-D pieces must have a wire for hanging. We have plenty of pedestals and possibly shelving for 3-D pieces. We will also have a place for unframed work to be displayed.

We will be having 2 events during the show to help boost sales:The Downtown Merchants Holiday Open House will be Friday, November 9th (opening day of the exhibit) from 4-9 pm. Gregg Perez will be demonstrating linoleum cut printing that evening (with a workshop to follow 11/17). We'll be serving holiday cookies and punch.Winterfest will be on Saturday, December 1st from 10-4 pm. We will be having free children's art activities and cookies that day. We've arranged for a great opportunity for LCVA Artists!

We have set up two dates this fall for artists to visit Hidden Lake Gardens and paint/photograph/draw/get inspired. Then you'll have approximately 2 months to finish/frame/etc. your creations on you own.

In January, we will be displaying our work at Hidden Lake Gardens. We haven't determined the exact dates yet but we should know within the next few weeks.

The two working dates are Saturday, October 20th and Saturday, November 3rd. We will be working from 9 am until whenever you're done (they close at dusk). You may come either day or both days.

The Bank of Lenawee's "Lenawee Live" Exhibition was installed today and once again there was a tremendous turnout of Lenawee County artists who submitted work. If anyone happens to see Pi Benio please thank her for the exhausting work she does to make this show happen. The Lenawee Live awards presentation will be held this Friday, September 14, 2007 at 6 pm.

Art-A-Licious: Get ready for an exciting art festival this weekend in downtown Adrian. The event includes, art demonstrations, Lost Arts, downtown merchant sales, Elenor Brown Dance Center Dancers, Croswell singers from "Urinetown", River Raisin Ragtime Revue, Drew Carter Band, Skate Board Design, Drum Line Competition, Adrian High Jazz Band & Lady Blues Choir, Encore Studio Dancers, Saline Big Band and the LCVA's Box Show. Art-A-Licious is this Friday, September 14th, noon-8PM and Saturday, September 15th, 10AM - 8PM.

LCVA Box Show: We began accepting boxes this past Thursday and so far we have 38 entries. We will continue to accept entries during regular gallery hours until the Final Auction Bid Party on Saturday, September 29th, 5-8PM. Duane Bastian will be this years Juror. He will also select the 2008 Spotlight Exhibition artists from entry packets which are due September 29th at 5PM.

The Boulevard Market: A call for art was sent out this past week for 2D and 3D work to be installed at the Boulevard Market in Tecumseh during their "Art Affair" week. Spotlight Show Prospectus 2008

The Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts invites its members with exhibiting status to apply for the 2008 LCVA Spotlight Exhibition. Two or three artists will be selected by the Box Show juror, Duane Bastian. Select artists will exhibit multiple works at the LCVA Gallery May 15 - June 14, 2008. Artists not selected will exhibit their work January 5 - February 2, 2008.

Eligibility
Participation is open to all LCVA Exhibiting Members (new and current). Entries must be original works of art or fine craft. Works produced from kits, published plans, or commercially reproduced or giclee prints will not be accepted.

Entry

To apply, artists must submit materials for the juror's review by taking them to the LCVA Gallery no later than 4 PM on Saturday, September 29, 2007. Packets should be labeled with the artist's name and "Spotlight Exhibition". Duane Bastian, local artist and retired Art Education Professor, will select artists to be included in the LCVA Spotlight Exhibition from these materials. Packets must include:

-10-20 works, via slide representation or digital images. (Please make sure your digital files open on the LCVA computer when you drop off your packet.)
-A script giving titles, sizes, and media for the slides or digital files
-An exhibition list/resume
-A brief artist's statement that relates to the images submitted
-A check for annual exhibiting membership for those who are not currently members at this level.

Slides

Slides must be 2"x2" mount size, no glass mounts. Artwork consisting of multiple panels, diptychs, or series meant to be viewed as one unit must be on one slide. Detail slides are welcomed. Each slide must be labeled clearly with name of artist and title. Indicated top of slide with an arrow on the correct viewing side of the slide. Slides may be picked up at the Gallery after juror selections have been made.

Digital Entries

Digital entries may be submitted on a CD and dropped off at the LCVA Gallery. Images must be in .tif or .jpg format and include name and title. CD's may be picked up at the LCVA Gallery after juror selections have been made.

Exhibition Agreement

Artists selected for the Spotlight Show will be responsible for gallery preparation, installation, tags, and removal. Work submitted for the selection process are used to determine the best candidates for the show and assures the juror that the artist has a sizable body of quality work and will continue to produce such. The work submitted via slides or digital is not required to be displayed in the 2008 Spotlight Exhibition. The submission of a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to constitute agreement on the part of the artist with all conditions set forth in this Prospectus. Submission of work constitutes permission to photograph it for publicity purposes and documentation for permanent records. The LCVA reserves the right to refuse any entry and to withdraw any work from the exhibition by Board majority vote.

The Box Show is nearly here, and once again you are thinking what are you going to do? Want some fresh perspective, access to more equipment, new ideas from other artists, commeraderie of other LCVA members? Well, we have just the thing......two 3 hour make your box workshops. Come to one or both. You only need to bring some media you would like to work in and stuff from your studio that has hung around so everytime you look at it you think, there is something that won't allow you to throw it out, that it has a purpose. This could be parts of old, unresolved pieces, found objects, etc I have tons of metal, wood, and paper boxes for you to use, lots of found objects, a welder, clay, wood, you name it!

Lenawee Live: The Lenawee Live Exhibition at the Bank of Lenawee is in the works. LCVA artists do not pay an entry fee and may reserve a tent during Artilicious. As soon as the prospectus is complete we will let everyone know. Work will be installed at the Bank on September 9th and will be taken down the following Sunday, September 16th.

2008 Calendar: The 2008 calendar was passed around and approved by the Board, with the exception of the names. The Show names are not solid and may be changed at a later date.

An idea was brought forward to have a "rummage sale" where all proceeds go to the LCVA. If anyone is interested in seeing this idea through to fruition in 2008 please let me know.

6. Long Term Goal: The LCVA's goal in the next 1-2 years is to move the gallery to a location where we would not pay rent, for example a bank or a library. The achievement of this plan would allow us to sublease the existing gallery and turn it into studio space. It would also eliminate the need for gallery sitting. The cost savings from not having to pay rent would allow us to hire a full time gallery director.
7. Planting art seeds downtown: By the next board meeting, obtain a minimum of four business owners in Lenawee County that would allow us to hang art in their place of business. The goal is to increase exhibiting opportunities for artists, and promote the LCVA. Artists would install all work themselves.
8. Gallery Sitting: Janet will be calling all members to see when they can gallery sit. If you would like to volunteer for gallery sitting please contact Janet Graham grahams4@tc3net.com or Gregg Perez gandkperez@tc3net.com . A gallery sitting schedule can be found under the links section of this page.

Check out the Daily Telegram today, Sunday, June 10th for a really nice article on the Artists of All Ages Exhibition. Daily Telegram reporter Phil Johnson wrote some really nice things about the show and the artists. Lad Strayer also has some great photos of artists at work. Thanks Phil and Lad. If you happen to see Pi Benio or Kris Schmidt please give them a big thanks as well. They both do a TON of work to help turn ideas into reality. Attention Artists All Ages Participants

You can use a partial image, the same of different media, or anything that is somewhat evocative of the work. Lenawee Live 2007 & ArtALicious

The Lenawee Live Exhibition sponsored by the Bank of Lenawee and hung at the downtown office will take place September 10-15 ,2007 with a reception and awards at 6pm Friday the 15th. It will be juried for prizes by Mary Fortuna, Gallery Director at Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester. Artists can submit up to 3 works in any media. Submission for LCVA members is free. This year the exhibit will be part of ArtALicious, a two-day arts festival, Friday Sept 15 and Saturday Sept 16 in downtown Adrian that will present both visual and performing arts. The LCVA will be sponsoring artists demonstrations and exhibits in tents in an art fair context. The demonstrations will continue throughout both days. If you are interested in demonstrating contact Pi (263-9548 or pbenio@adrian.edu ) before mid June. For those not wishing to demonstrate tents will be available to teams of two LCVA members at no cost to display and sell your works. Other organizations involved in Artilicious are the River Raisin Ragtime Review, Adrian Symphony, the Adrian Downtown Development Authority, the Croswell Opera House, the Adrian Public Library, The Saline Big Band, and others.

Lenawee Artists of All Ages Exhibition- The kid's art is available for pick up at the Gallery by the artists. Pi will be contacting all the artists to make sure everyone will be ready by the start of the exhibition. Janet Graham is almost done designing the card. This show is sponsored by the Stephen L. Hickman Family Foundation.
Botanical Show- There will be no raffle for this show....maybe next year.
Box Show- Kimberly will be contacting some businesses to see if we can get a sponsor. We also need a juror. We set up two dates for workshops at Adrian College to make boxes. Those days will be July 22nd and August 11th. More information will be provided by Jenna. REMEMBER...this show is only 2 weeks long, so boxes must be ready by the start of the show. It starts Sept. 6th.
Gallery Future- We are still researching moving the gallery but it a SLOW process. We are still moving forward with this goal.
Lenawee Live- We are waiting for an approved prospectus before we can move forward. More information will be provided soon!
Gallery Sitting Teams- Now that Bethany Camarati's internship is over we are going back to gallery sitting teams. I schedule Thursday nights. Kimberly schedules Friday mornings. Pi schedules Friday nights. Saturday team leader is still under discussion.
Sponsorships- Kris Schmidt is doing a great job at finding sponsors. She was responsible for securing the Stephen L. Hickman Family Foundation sponsorship for the Lenawee All Ages Exhibition. Press Release "Spotlight Exhibition"

Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts' first Spotlight Exhibition, featuring Sarah Miller, James Freeman, and Clay Leonard, opens Thursday, May 10, in LCVA Gallery, 112 W. Maumee in downtown Adrian. Exhibiting members of LCVA applied for the show by submitting images of their work, resumes, and artist statements to guest curator, Peggy Grant. Ms. Grant is the director of 20 North Gallery in Toledo.

Two receptions for the public will be held, on Friday, May 18, and on Friday, June 15. Both receptions are scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m., with the artists' talk at 6:30 p.m. The show closes on Saturday, June 16.

Gallery hours are Thursday, 4 - 8 p.m.;
Friday, 10 - 2 and 4 - 8 p.m.;
and Saturday, noon - 4 p.m.

Ms. Miller holds a master of fine arts degree from Bowling Green State University and is a new resident of Adrian. She is a self-employed visual artist, and in 2006-2007, was on faculty at Adrian College, Siena Heights University, and the University of Michigan. Ms. Miller will exhibit mixed media pop-culture portraits of famous artists and athletes. Mr. Leonard graduated from Adrian College with a bachelor of fine arts in 2006. He worked as a teaching assistant in the ceramics program at Adrian College during the 2006-2007 school year and will begin a graduate assistantship in the master of fine arts degree program at Bowling Green State University in the fall. Mr. Leonard specializes in hand thrown, functional pottery. Mr. Freeman exhibits widely in ceramics and wood, recently winning Best of Show in the Riverside Art Center's wood art competition. His work typically references functional and often historical ceramic vessel forms, though he views it as primarily sculptural. He resides in Manitou Beach. Both Freeman and Leonard do extensive work in glaze development.

Artists interested in submitting work for next spring's Spotlight Exhibition may drop off their application packets in the gallery before September 29. The Pentamere Winery in Tecumseh is displaying James Freeman pottery from May 7 through June 2. It is a different type of work than what will be at the LCVA gallery. Catherine has been working with a student designer on an updated membership brochure, Spotlight Show card, Botanical Show Card, Box Show card, and Holiday show card. Janet Graham and I are working on the Lenawee Artists of all Ages Show card. Pi prepared a digital cd with all Lenawee show information for us to use on the card and advertisements.

Anyone interested in participating in the Saline Circle of Art fundraiser should visit their website at www.salinepictureframe.com . Remember the deadline for art dropoff is May 1st. All proceeds go to the Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor.

The New Work Exhibition is one of my favorite shows. Like most people we've been couped up in our warm houses trying to stay out of the bitter cold. It's a good time for many of our members to create work due to the lack of other responsibilities like mowing the lawn, tending the garden, etc, etc. The exhibition is what the name states..."new work". You will find 2d and 3d work. We typically exhibit a wide variety of mediums. The New Work Exhibition begins Thursday, March 1st. We will have an artists reception on Friday, March 2nd, 5-8pm. The public is welcome so please bring your friends and family. There is no cost for admission. The LCVA Gallery is located at 112 W. Maumee St. in downtown Adrian, MI. February 07 Update

Since our board meeting was cancelled due to the blizzard...here is a summary of some of the things that are going on with the LCVA.

1. The New Work Exhibition starts March 1. Check out the Gallery Sitting Schedule for important drop off and installation dates.

2. We have a new Gallery Director Intern and her name is Bethany Camarati. She is a senior at Adrian College. Her first task is to collect artist statements from exhibiting artists before the New Work Show.

3. Approximately 24 LCVA artists participated in the Youth Art Program Feb 3rd and Feb 10th. If you are an LCVA exhibiting artist and did not participate in the Youth Art Program but would still like to participate in the Artists of All Ages Exhibition in June please contact Pi or myself.

4. We're still moving forward with our goal to move the LCVA Gallery into the Bank of Lenawee. We'll have an update on this in March.

5. We want to remind everyone that your annual membership covers your entry fee for Lenawee Live this summer.

6. The LCVA is planning a Figurative Study group to be held at Adrian College. Email me if you're interested in joining the group. Tentative cost is $10 per person per night which pays for model and travel expenses. We're still working on the day. It will run from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We hope to start some time in March.

7. Pending final approval from the Board we're still moving forward with a grant request for a community building mural project, facilitated by the nationally recognized muralist team AVEC (Arts Vitally Enrich Community). The LCVA proposes a collaborative 3-day session of mural making Sept 14-16, 2007, bringing together the Adrian College Department of Art, Visual Arts Educators from Lenawee (VAEL), and the Adrian Training School (ATS). The completed murals will tour five community sites (Adrian Public Library, Croswell Opera House, YMCA of Lenawee, Hope Communtiy Center, and Adrian College's Student Center) further expanding community involvement.

8. Miscellaneous Stuff: Has anyone seen the PBS documentary, "Two Toledos"? Check your local listings for the next time it airs. It's a documentary of artists from sister cities Toledo, OH and Toledo Spain.

Lenawee Artists of All Ages Concept

A few members came up with the idea two years ago. The idea was to have a show featuring members artwork and artwork of their children. It was then rightly modified to members artwork and any childs artwork. The first show in 2006 was good, but this year we want to make it better. Our goal is to really highlight the experience of the two age groups working together. The working relationship between the two age groups sparked the interest of the Stephen L. Hickman Family. And, it was this relationship concept that motivated them to sponsor the exhibition.

Part one of this idea calls for volunteers. We have some but we need more ASAP. We need volunteers to help instruct children who are enrolled in the Adrian College/YMCA Youth Art Program for one day only (Feb 3rd or Feb 10th). For volunteer information click here.

The childrens work created during your one day workshop will be matted and framed for display during the Lenawee Artists of All Ages Exhibition, June 21 - July 21.

Part two of this idea will require you to create one or more pieces of art in response to the childrens work. And, that's all there is to it. We'll take it from there.

Information for Lenawee All Artists One-on-One Activity

1. You have or will select either Saturday Feb 3 or Sat Feb 10. It will take place from 9:30- noon. Right now we have more people on the 3rd if it doesn’t matter to you.

2. Bring most of your own supplies and tools but if you need basic stuff or large equipment like an extension cord, easel, paper towels, bandsaw, a vice, etc let me know so I can make sure to have it on hand for you or make sure it is working correctly. If you could let me know a week in advance that would be great. Call me at (517)263-9548, 264-3901 or email pbenio@adrian.edu

3. Plan on being at the Art and Design Dept, top floor, Mahan Hall, Adrian College campus with enough time to get situated and set up. You will be in a studio that is most conducive to your activity. Pi will be there at 8am both mornings, so come between 8 and 9am.

4. You will show the child, who could be between 1st and 8th grade, how to work in your particular media and technique and help them to produce at the very least one piece. Of the works that they produce, you will keep what you think are the 1 or 2 best. These will become the works that you will use as inspirations for a work you will create for the exhibition at the LCVA Gallery June21-July 21, (work due the week prior). Both your work and the child’s will be presented together in the gallery. If you think your project is best for a particular age group let me know asap. Also, if you could leave work that needs to be matted with us that day, I will get it matted within the next week and leave it at the LCVA Gallery for you to pick up so you have plenty of time to use it as your muse. Just remember that it is the work that will be displayed and you will need to bring it when you bring your work.

Youth Art Program

Attention LCVA artists! Many of you showed interest in working with children in the Adrian College/YMCA Youth Art Program. We need you to contact Pi Benio. We need LCVA artists to choose a day to work with the Youth Art Program kids. Pi will ask what medium you would like to teach the kids. You can choose either February 3rd or February 10th and the time will be from 9:30 am to noon. If you know of any children who might be interested in this program please stop by the LCVA gallery for a registration form. Work produced from these workshops will be displayed at the LCVA Gallery this summer in the "Artists of All Ages Exhibition". Submitting work:
Submit as many pieces as you can. Bring your work during any open hours, and tag it (leaving one copy of the tag at the desk), by Wednesday, November 15th at 4:00 pm. Drop off times are as follows. Drop off your work at the gallery on Monday, November 13, 4-8pm, or Tuesday, November 14, 4-8 pm. Installation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 4-8pm. Works dropped off late may not make it onto the walls until other pieces sell. All work is for sale!

Ornament Donations:
The LCVA will be accepting handmade/decorated Christmas tree ornament donations. Donated ornaments will be sold to help raise funds for LCVA programs and will be used to decorate the gallery during the show.

Details for preparing work:
Works for the walls need to be framed and wired. It takes a long time to hang this show so please be considerate and firmly wire your 2-D work. Attach wire to screw eyes or commercial hangers sold with the frame. Please do not use saw-tooth hangers. Only wall works, sculpture, ceramics, etc., displayed on pedestals will be included on the master price/artist list.

Matted or backed 2-D works, if wrapped in plastic, labeled and priced are sought for the flip boxes. Note cards, ornaments, jewelry, and gifts are also encouraged. Please label and price these and provide the volunteer at the desk (or put in the same folder where you found tags for your wall and pedestal works) with inventory/price lists for these items, clearly marked with your name and contact information.

LCVA Members Recycle Exhibition: Fall 2008

This will be a three part, multi-year effort. The first year well known artists from the region will show in the LCVA Gallery which will afford the area art teachers a first hand look at what is being done with recycled materials in contemporary art. In collaboration with the Lenawee Art Teachers ISD group, there will be special programs in the gallery with the artists and packets of information for the teachers to plan incorporating recycled materials into their curriculums. The following year, their students will be exhibiting recycled material works in the LCVA Gallery while internationally known artist Tyree Guyton will be exhibiting in the Adrian College Subnitz Gallery. Mr. Guyton first came to public attention when he began the Heidelberg Project, adorning abandoned houses in Detroit with cast off materials. He will conduct workshops with area students, including college students and create our own version of Heidelberg as a part of our new public sculpture initiative in downtown Adrian. Mr. Guyton will also in his residency here be an artist-in-residence at the Omni Source Scrap Yard on Treat Street. The third year will see the LCVA members use their experience of the previous exhibitions that have heighened awareness to create works using recycled materials. The shows will be sponsored by Wacker and the Lenawee County Solid Waste Department.

Adrian Middle School 7-8 teachers Leo Lauver and Ryan Bills will display their students work. This show is sponsored by Adrian Public Schools.

New Work Exhibition
Exhibition: March 1 – April 7, 2007

This exhibition displays the work of LCVA members. It is what the name states. It is an exhibition of new work by LCVA exhibiting members. The New Work Exhibition encompasses all medias both two dimensional and three dimensional. The LCVA currently has approximately 50 exhibiting artists. The wine and cheese reception for this show is Friday, March 2, from 5 PM to 7:30 PM.

Lenawee High School Art Exhibition

The Lenawee High School is open to students enrolled in a Lenawee County High School. All works submitted must have been completed during the student's current high school year and can be of any media. The show is juried for prizes which are announced during the reception by the juror with comments as to their selections. The exhibit is sponsored by the Stubnitz Foundation.

Lenawee Artists of All Ages Exhibition
Exhibition: June 21 – July 21, 2007

This exhibition displays the work of LCVA members. The Lenawee Artists of All Ages Exhibition typically celebrates Lenawee County and its artists. In addition to featuring recent adult work it also features children's art. Volunteer member artists will pair with a child to create works of art to be exhibited. Work will be displayed at both children and adult eye level. Adrian’s Maple City Fest occurs during this show. The LCVA organizes several events during Maple City Fest including children’s art activities, a historical tour through Adrian’s historical district, and informational tours to Adrian’s Millennium Park. A child friendly desert reception will occur during Maple City Fest.

Botanicals: Foliage and Flowers

In celebration of the gardens of summer, this multimedia exhibition will present artists working with flowers and foliage as subjects. Works will range from ceramic vessels decorated using maiolica to photography, pastels and watercolor. The exhibit will be included on the Adrian Garden Club's tour. A reception with the artists will be held at that time also. Members will also be displaying a sculptural work in each of the five gardens on the tour for raffle to raise money for LCVA programs.

Member’s 5th Annual Box Show and Auction
Exhibition: September 6 – September 29, 2007
Silent Auction: September 29, 2007

The Box Show and Auction is the LCVA’s only fund raising event of the year. Exhibiting members are given the task of creatively making art that takes the form of a box, embellishes a box, is contained within a box, is attached to a box, or depicts a box. The exhibition includes both functional boxes and nonfunctional boxes and all are available for purchase through the silent auction at the closing party on Saturday, September 29, 2007, 7-9 PM. Proceeds from the auction fund LCVA’s programs. A desert reception to be announced will feature live music, tableaux vivant, and actors portraying famous artists past and present. All events are free and open to the public. Past jurors include Rick Manore, founder and director of Detroit’s C-Pop Gallery and Toledo’s Peggy Grant, director of the 20 North Gallery. Juror awards are donated by local businesses.

The Spotlight exhibition 2007
The Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts invites its members with exhibiting status to apply for the 2007 LCVA Spotlight Exhibition. A few member artists, selected September 30 by the Box Show juror, will exhibit multiple works at the LCVA Gallery May 10 - June 14, 2007.

Eligibility
Participation is open to all LCVA Exhibiting Members (new and current). Entries must be original works of art or fine craft. Works produced from kits, published plans, or commercially reproduced or giclee prints will not be accepted.

Entry
To apply, artists must submit materials for the juror's review by taking them to the LCVA Gallery no later than 4 PM on Saturday, September 30, 2006. Packets should be labeled with the artist's name and "Spotlight Exhibition". Peggy Grant, director of Toledo's 20 North Gallery, will select artists to be included in the LCVA Spotlight Exhibition from these materials. Packets must include:

10-20 works, via slide representation or digital images. (Please make sure your digital files open on the LCVA computer when you drop off your packet.)
A script giving titles, sizes, and media for the slides or digital files
An exhibition list/resume
A brief artist's statement that relates to the images submitted
A check for annual exhibiting membership for those who are not currently members at this level.

Slides
Slides must be 2"x2" mount size, no glass mounts. Artwork consisting of multiple panels, diptychs, or series meant to be viewed as one unit must be on one slide. Detail slides are welcomed.

Each slide must be labeled clearly with name of artist and title. Indicated top of slide with an arrow on the correct viewing side of the slide. Slides may be picked up at the Gallery after juror selections have been made.

Digital Entries
Digital entries may be submitted on a CD and dropped off at the LCVA Gallery. Images must be in .tif or .jpg format and include name and title. CD's may be picked up at the LCVA Gallery after juror selections have been made.

Exhibition Agreement
Artists selected for the Spotlight Show will be responsible for gallery preparation, installation, tags, and removal. Work submitted for the selection process are used to determine the best candidates for the show and assures the juror that the artist has a sizable body of quality work and will continue to produce such. The work submitted via slides or digital is not required to be displayed in the 2007 Spotlight Exhibition. The submission of a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to constitute agreement on the part of the artist with all conditions set forth in this Prospectus. Submission of work constitutes permission to photograph it for publicity purposes and documentation for permanent records. The LCVA reserves the right to refuse any entry and to withdraw any work from the exhibition by Board majority vote.

2D or not 2D

2D or not 2D?......that is the question. When it comes to creating art for the upcoming Box Show some of us 2d artists struggle with this question. What I normally do is create something 2d first which I'm more comfortable with, and then try to create something 3d. If it doesnt work out then I have my 2d to fall back on.

I have an idea for a 3D piece that will require some help from 2D artists. It involves creating a retangular structure using pieces of masonite board. It's basically a mini millenium project. Only the structure will be made out of painted boards instead of cast in bronze. Let me know if you're interested. I will provide the boards for this.

If photographers can figure out how to affix a photo onto a board we can make a mini photo millenium too.

Tim Horton's Coffee Talk

Cathie, Marjorie, Pi, Jill and I met at Tim Hortons in Adrian this morning to go over The Box Show.

Drop off dates and deadlines (Box show)- The discussion was that we want to accept work all the way up to the Auction...however we're afraid if we don't have an early deadline we may not have enough work to have a show. We will be sending out an announcement stating something to this effect. "Members, please have your work ready to be installed by August 16th. However, if you require more time we will accept your work during normal gallery hours after the 16th." Cathie will be at the gallery on Saturday from noon to 4 PM on August 12th to accept work. I will be at the gallery on Monday, August 14th from 4:15 PM to 6 PM. Jill and Kathy will be putting up shelves and accepting work in the gallery from 6-8 PM. We need a volunteer to sit on the 15th from 4-8 PM. We will be installing the work on Tuesday, August 16th...we need volunteers for this.

Finance Committee- Pi and myself will be contacting Lad for an update.

Web Site- We would like to get an update from Kimberly on this at the board meeting.

Spotlight Show- We need to put our feelers out to see who would be interested in participating. I will be working on a simple prospectus this week. If you are interested please say so. Peggy Grant will be choosing the Spotlight artists so we need to have either slides or digital pics preferably before the Box Show Auction on Sept. 30th. We may not limit this show to 3 persons. We may have more depending on how many members show interest.

Can Do Show- None of us were sure of the status for this show. If we are going to do it then we should get busy with the particulars.

Box Show- The cards should arrive by this thursday. There was some discussion as to which lists we will be sending to. Pi mentioned that Valerie would take some cards to send to the Circle of Art list. Christine also volunteered to take cards to the Saline Picture Frame Company. We would like to request that the labels from our list be printed off by zipcode if possible. Cathie and Jennifer are working together to hire musicians for the auction night. We decided that we will be asking members to supply food, hors d'ovres and wine. We will ask local businesses to donate awards....if you know of any businesses which would like to donate please ask them.

The Gallery- We all thought it would be a good idea to have a cleaning party at the gallery. Specific dates to follow in the coming weeks. The floor is in bad shape. There was some discussion as to how we could possibly install wood floors in the gallery. We all thought laminate flooring would not handle the wear and tear. But, at this point I would say we're all still open for suggestions. Thanks goes out to Janet for volunteering to get the back hallway drywall fixed. There is some discussion going around as to whether we should continue to maintain a gallery, or should we float our shows to different locations? We're obligated to provide a place for the High School Show due to our Stubnitz Foundation grant for the next five years. Cathie mentioned that when the LCVA first started they did float from one place to another. She added that not having a central location created many problems. Personally, I think this topic would be a good conversation piece for the next informal coffee talk.

Lad Strayer Paris Exhibition

NEWS OF ART Baseball-themed exhibit to open in Adrian gallery.
The Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts will present the exhibition “Over the Fence: Portraits of Negro Leaguers” July 9-Aug. 6 in its gallery at 112 West Main St., Adrian.

The pencil and clay works of Ann Arbor artist Phil Dewey will pay homage to Negro League baseball stars such as Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, James “Cool Papa” Bell, and Buck O’Neill.

As part of the July 16 artist reception, Detroit-area Negro League veterans Harold “BeBop” Gordon, Cecil Kaiser, and Melvin Duncan will share their memories of Negro League life during a talk at 2 p.m. in Joanne Steele Insurance, 130 North Main St., Adrian, followed by a meet-and-greet for Dewey and the players from 3 to 6 p.m. in the LCVA.

The timing of the exhibition was set to coincide with the July 30 induction of 17 Negro League and pre-Negro League players and executives into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Inductee Sol White (1868-1955) played for Adrian’s Page Fence Giants in 1895.

James Freeman Exhibition

I stopped by the U of M Hospital yesterday to see a watercolor exhibit by Jill Stefani Wagner. Her "Tuscan Days" watercolors are really beautiful. Anyway, I didn't know until I got there that James Freeman (LCVA Member) has a collection of work right next to Jill Stefani Wagner's. Both exhibitions are a part of the University's Gifts of Art Program. I can't tell you what a pleasant surprise it was to stumble upon his exhibition. The lighting was perfect as the sun beamed through the skylights into the lobby making it an ideal spot for reflection. The name of his collection is a perfect description of his work. They lean heavily toward artistic expression as opposed to functional ceramic pieces. I especially enjoyed his "Archeological Series" pieces which had a crustlike texture unlike the typical smooth glaze finish.

I have not written anything lengthy in awhile. So I am going to make up for it now!

The "Lenawee Artists of All Ages" is up and running. Next weekend is the Maple City Fest and here is a list of events:

Thursday, 22nd, 6-8pm: Downtown Architectural Tour-space limited, sign up at the gallery

Friday, 23rd, 10-6pm: Childrens Art Activities-activities start around 11 and go to about 3pm

Saturday, 24th, 9-11 am, Historical Adrian Architectural Tour (sign up is same as above), 11-2 pm Desert Reception.

Next, Our next show is called" Over The fence" Its all about the Negro Baseball league that was here in Adrian. there will be speakers, memorabilia vendor and of course an artist who works in portraiture.

At our board meeting we voted in changes and restructuring of the 2007 calendar. It is roughly set as follows:

Jan, 11-Feb 17th "Can Do" - A community Service project/show with emphasis on food for the hungry.

March 1 - April 7 "New Work" - Same format as always (member show)

April 19 -May 5 "County High School Show"

May 10-June 14 "Spotlight Show" - this is a 3 member show. Anyone interested in being a part of the show would need to submit images to the gallery by the last week of the box show, the juror of the box show would then pick out of all submitted, the chosen three would then curate their own show together. A prospectus will be available as we get closer.

June 12-July 19 "Lenawee Show" -Same format (Member Show)

July 26- Aug 25 "Relay for Life" (Non-Members) Show of survivors of/relatives of/Art of cancer

Sept 6- Sept 27 "Box Show" Same format, only length has shortened to two weeks.

Oct 14-Nov 5 "Recycle Show" (Non Members) In conjunction with Tyreee Guyton at Adrian College

Nov 15-December 23 "Holiday Show" Same as always

We have agreed to allow non-members to show for a nominal fee of $20 per show. They would not be members, but we would request they sit at least one time if they show. This rate would be reduced to $10 for students.

It has been suggested and agreed upon that using the gallery for art classes when we are not open would be something we should do..how come these things don't dawn on us earlier???? If you would like to teach a class, contact Christine Marsh, or myself via e-mail.

In an effort to streamline duties and alleviate stress on committee heads, we have decided to create "Teams". These groups of 4or 5 people would share the workload of a particular task throughout the year. We have some teams forming and would like more participation and people to sign up. They are as follows:

Membership Coordinator: They will handle any newsletters, membership updating, mailings: Janet graham and Jennifer Melms are currently signed up

Installations: they will coordinate with the committee heads the hanging and takedown of each show: kathy Tice Taylor and Jill Shaffer have signed up for this so far.

Education: They would organize the classes and teachers etc: Christine marsh has volunteered for this so far.

Receptions: They would coordinate and set up receptions for each show: Marjorie Castle and Emily Kackstetter have signed up so far.

Media Relations: They will be responsible for getting out press releases, via telegram, Access, radio etc..Cathie royer, Mary Martin and Heidi Spence have signed up so far.

Financial committee: These people help to raise funds/sponsors for the shows. Lad Strayer, Kris Schmidt, Greg DuMars, Lee Lewis Walsh and Jennifer Melms have already formed and started this group.

community Liason: This team would need to find out from various groups what is going on and when so that we maybe able to better coordinate events with what is happening in the community. We currently have no one signed up.

Grant Writing committee: This team would start the grant writing process in order to get funding. No one has signed up as of yet.

NEXT...Adrian Area Chamber of Commerce downtown has wall space (approx 10x7) they would like to put art on a rotating basis. If you would like to put your work on the wall let me know. The space requires both large and small pieces, two people could team up as well. More info? let me know.

Another thing, June 27th, at Mr.Ed's at 6:15pm is the members committee next meeting regarding the Box Show. be there if you want input.

Currently, an international Festival is in the works and planned for the same day as our auction. They have asked for our help, but it is very short notice. I will have more info as we investigate it further.

ALSO, ZANTA, a womans service organization is hosting an Art Gala Auction on Sept 9th. They will also have a silent auction-like a pre-auction, of a few f our boxes. They are collaborating with us to help drive up both of our organizations. If you have a piece of art you would like to donate to their auction, please let myself or Jill Shaffer know.

Basil Boys Meeting Review

The meeting started by announcing that all issues voted on will still need to be approved at the Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 13th at the gallery.

The first item on the agenda was voting on whether we should allow non-members to enter shows a la cart style. We proposed and approved that non-members can enter any show for $20, however they would be asked to gallery sit at least once. These persons would be considered contributors and not members for tax purposes.

The second issue was the introduction of the new calendar of shows for 2007. The new calendar once approved by the board will be posted next week. We essentially modified it by adding the "LCVA Spotlight Show" (formerly three person show) and by shortening the Box Show to two weeks.

The third issue was the approval of the "LCVA Spotlight Show" proposal. We voted to have the Box Show Juror select the artists. We also agreed that the artists in the show would curate the show. And, we agreed that we would use the TAA prospectus for the standards for application and slide submittals.

The fourth issue was the approval of using the gallery for classes during normally days which the gallery is normally closed (Sunday - Wednesday).

The fifth topic was the approval to streamline tasks by creating teams. We will be emailing and postal mailing all members asking them to complete a survey of their time and talents. Teams will be created for various tasks. For example, the Reception Team will be made up of persons who organize and set up for receptions. The Media Relations team will be responsible for advertising, cards, etc. The goal is to reduce the time spent trying to repeatedly find volunteers for the same task show after show.

Other discussion topics include the creation of a new website soon to be completed in the next month or two, Maple City Fest activities are being fine tuned, and Jennifer brought up some new ideas for the "Canstruction" Show. Jennifer also brought up some new ideas for coordinating membership information. She volunteered to be on the Membership Coordination Team and will propose her ideas at the next meeting.

The upcoming Box Show was discussed at different times during the meeting. It was fairly obvious to me that we have a lot of work to do in planning for this show. Therefore, we set up a time to meet specifically for planning the Box Show activities. That meeting will take place at Mr. Ed's Restaurant in Adrian on Tuesday, June 27th at 6:15 PM. All are welcome to attend, however since they do not have a conference room please RSVP with me so we can reserve a big table. Thanks

Pi wanted me to mention a word about the next show, which I'm pretty excited about. We met last week and decided on the name, "Over The Fence". It's a tribute to Negro League baseball players. Here's a little narrative about the show.

Negro Leagues Exhibition and Program
Exhibition: 7/9-8/6, 2006

With Adrian being the home of the legendary Negro League team, the Page Fence Giants and the induction of 16 Negro League Players into the Baseball Hall of Fame just announced, we will present a one person exhibition featuring the work of Phillip Dewey. Mr Dewey has shown in New York most recently, works in pencil and clay and does portraits of the famed players of the Negro Leagues. Coupled with this exhibition will be a program featuring Negro Leagues scholar and EMU Professor Dr Eddie Bedford who will introduce and interview three area veterans of the League. Louis Manley, a Negro League researcher will bring a collection of Negro Leagues memorabilia and local author Darcy Gifford who is currently writing a book on AdrianÂs Page Fence Giants will also read from her newest work. Artifacts form the Lenawee Historical Museum will also be on display during show. This program is sponsored by Roto Plastics and Ted Durst.

Pi and Kimberly will be working furiously in the weeks to come finalizing all the details for this show. I'll try to keep everyone posted as the information trickles in.

If you haven't been to the gallery lately you should plan a trip. The current show titled, "Lenawee Artists of All Ages" is up and running. Of the many artists in the show I'm especially pleased to see Catherine Royer's intaglio prints titled, "Shoulder". I've always been impressed with her draftsmanship and techniques. I'm also amazed that even her attempts at new techniques are impressive works of sophistication.

Now that the Lenawee Artists Show is underway we can all start thinking more and more about the Box Show. I don't think I can express in words how important this show is. The Box Show auction is basically "the show". We've been preparing for this show in a few ways. Christine Marsh made the suggestion a while back to participate in the Saline Picture Frame Company "Circle of Art" Auction benefiting The Food Gatherers. She made the suggestion so that the LCVA could learn some tips on how to run a successful art auction. I sent the word out to our members and was impressed at the number of LCVA artists who participated. That in itself could make a huge difference in the success of our own Box Show. After speaking with the owners of the Saline Picture Frame Company they were very happy with our participation and even volunteered to help advertise our auction. I love it when people come together to help each other. Another interesting comment I heard was that the contributing artists were also the ones who purchased much of the art in the auction. Of course itdidn't take long for the logical part of my brain to see that the more artists involved in the show equals more contributions. I really think this is something we need to stress at our next members meeting. Oh yeah, the next meeting...when is it? It's June 6th at Basil Boys in Tecumseh at 6:15 pm. I reserved one of the back conference rooms.

The last thing I wanted to do was remind everyone that the reception for the current show is Friday, June 2nd, 5-7pm.

New Work Exhibition
Exhibition: February 23 – March 18, 2006

This exhibition is what the name states. It is an exhibition of new work by LCVA members. It encompasses all mediums both two dimensional and three dimensional. The LCVA currently has approximately 50 exhibiting artists. The wine and cheese reception for this show was Friday, March 10, from 5 PM to 7:30 PM. The guest speaker topic was “How Do Artists Keep Their Work Alive Over Time?”

Lenawee Artists of All Ages Exhibition
Exhibition: May 18 – July 1
Maple City Fest: June 22 – 24, 2006

Formerly titled “Lenawee Then and Now”, this show recently received a change in title. The new show is titled, “Lenawee Artists of All Ages”. As the name states, it celebrates Lenawee County artists of all ages. Exhibiting members are invited to submit children’s work along with their own. Adult work will be displayed at an adult eye level and children’s work will be displayed at a child’s eye level. Adrian’s Maple City Fest will occur during this show. The LCVA organizes several events during Maple City Fest including several children’s art activities, a historical tour through Adrian’s historical district, and informational tours to Adrian’s Millennium Park. This year the LCVA will host two receptions during the Lenawee Artists of All Ages Show. The opening reception will be a wine and cheese event on Friday, May 19, 2006. The speaker and topic for the opening reception will be announced at a later date. The second reception will be a desert reception during Maple City Fest on Saturday, June 24, 2006.

Member’s 4th Annual Box Show and Auction
Exhibition: August 17 – September 23, 2006
Silent Auction: September 23, 2006

The Box Show and Auction is the LCVA’s only fund raising event of the year. Exhibiting members are given the task to creatively make art that takes the form of a box, embellishes a box, is contained within a box, is attached to a box, or depicts a box. The exhibition includes both functional boxes and nonfunctional boxes and all are available for purchase through the silent auction at the closing party on Saturday, September 23, 2006, 7-9 PM. Proceeds from the auction fund LCVA’s programs. A desert reception to be announced will feature live music, tableaux vivant, and actors portraying famous artists past and present. All events are free and open to the public. Last years awards were announced by juror, Rick Manore, founder and director of Detroit’s C-Pop Gallery. Juror awards are donated by local businesses.

4th Annual Holiday Salon: Art Show and Sale
Exhibition: November 23 – December 23, 2006

The Holiday Salon Show celebrates the holiday season by providing works of art for sale. There is no limit to the number of pieces submitted and works of art can be either original work or reproductions. Works of art are hung wherever there is space available in the gallery. The objective is to fill the gallery from floor to ceiling with art! The LCVA also organizes special children’s art activities during Adrian Area Chamber of Commerce Winterfest. The exhibition reception and speaker will be announced at a later date.

Three Person Show Proposal

A few nights ago I met with Lad, Pi, Kimberly, Mike and Jenna before the regular board meeting. The purpose of the pre-meeting was to get everyone on the same page. Jenna and Kimberly proposed having an agenda for the board meetings. They proposed creating a punch list of things that the LCVA would like to do. Kimberly has somebody working on our website. The big news was that Pi suggested cutting back the number of nonmember shows and creating one more member show.....which would probably be a members "three person show". Here are some of the discussion topics concerning a "three person show".

1. There was some debate concerning who would curate the show? It could be the three members or it could be the members committee.

2. There was some debate concerning which members would get to have a three person show? It would have to be people who have enough work on hand. It would have to be people whose work goes well together. The combination of artists would have to be made up of 3d and 2d to maximize the space in the gallery.

3. There was a discussion of logistics. If we have 50 exhibiting members and only one 3 person show a year. If you do the math, some members may not get their own show for 17 years.

4. There was a suggestion to have the three person show back to back with a members show. There was some concern that having these shows back to back would reduce the participation in the regular members shows. But, it was brought up that people who have enough work for their own show should have enough work to participate in the regular shows.

I think it would be best if we got more input on this from members. My thoughts are that this is a great opportunity for members. I think we may be able to ask artists for 5 or 6 pieces for regular shows instead of the usual 4-5. And, I agree with Pi who said artists will need to communicate with other artists in order to curate their own shows. This kind of communication is good for the artist and the organization. There will be some debate concerning who gets to be a part of the three person show each year. We don't want to upset anyone. So, if you have some suggestions or comments we would like to hear them.

Here is what Cathie had to say.... "This probably won't be much of a problem for awhile at least, but if several groups of 3 propose shows, who decides who goes this year? Perhaps we could use a nonmember artist (say, the box show juror as we did last year with the TFAS show) to select the group and curate the works from their CDs or slides. Some might be willing to make studio visits if the 3 folks got their work together in one place nearby.

Or, we could have a committee of the whole meet to select and curate--maybe some active artists who don't have regular committee assignments but might be interested in a one-shot commitment........... I worry a bit about the group dynamics of members selecting members in a small organization such as ours. We don't need to tick people off and lose members. We could try a different method of selection each year until we find one that works for us . . . .Cathie"
